There are two options: McCarthy or someone else. If McCarthy wants the headache, he’ll decide to run again, promise new concessions to various members, and the House will again vote on his leadership.
If McCarthy accepts his fate, House Republicans will fight over who to nominate next. The conference has already floated several names, including current members of leadership — Reps. Steve Scalise, Tom Emmer and Elise Stefanik — attack dog Jim Jordan, the less antagonistic, 20-year House veteran Tom Cole, and Patrick McHenry, who now serves as House leader on a temporary basis.
