Russia has said the fierce battles between Israel and Palestinian militants are a “matter of great worry”, in the Kremlin’s first comment since Hamas fighters launched an unprecedented attack across the Gaza border.
Dmitry Peskov, president Vladimir Putin’s spokesman, told reporters the fighting was “the subject of our particular concern these days,” according to state newswire RIA Novosti.
“We need to put the situation back on the peace track as quickly as possible — if this violence goes on like this, the conflict could spiral further. This is a great danger for the region,” Peskov said. Putin has not spoken to Israeli or Palestinian leaders but could do so “if necessary,” he added.
