The Federal Aviation Administration has cleared Boeing’s 737 MAX 10 jet for test flights.
“Boeing welcomes the FAA’s decision to grant type inspection authorization for the 737-10, clearing the airplane to begin certification flight testing,” a Boeing spokesperson told Barron’s via email.
The news signals a welcome step forward for investors, who likely remember that a few years ago MAX jets temporarily were grounded following two deadly crashes.
The 737-10 is the company’s largest plane in Boeing’s MAX line of single-aisle jets. Boeing had hoped to secure FAA certification for the MAX 10 by last year, but earlier this year management said it expected the sign-off by late this year or early 2024. The company is still waiting for FAA certification for its MAX 7 and 777X jets, The Wall Street Journal noted.
“The FAA granted Type Inspection Authorization for the Boeing 737 MAX 10,” the FAA told Barron’s. “Safety will dictate the certification timeline.”
Boeing shares (ticker: BA) were up 1.1% to $220.56. This year, the stock has gained 16%.
